Provident Living
All of Us Should Learn How!

Provident living is an approach, a cultivation of a standard of living that can assist us in managing the temporal and spiritual eventualities in our lives. None of us know what disasters we may face that would make money fail, or make it difficult for us to buy water and food and other emergency supplies. Provident living can help us prepare for these eventualities.

Provident Living on Longevity
According to recent studies, low-moisture foods such as wheat, white rice, pinto beans, potato flakes, macaroni, rolled oats, etc., that are correctly packaged and stored at 75°F or cooler can retain their nutrition and are suitable for consumption for about 30 years. Powdered milk stays at 20 years. The rule of thumb, however, prevails. Do not forget your provident living guideline: note down the date of processing or the date of purchase. Rotate your food. Use the ones that are of older date before the new ones. Also, note that the decline in taste and nutritional integrity of food is sometimes attributed to the initial quality of the food when processed, how it was processed, and how it was stored. These foods, however, will still maintain life in an emergency situation.

Provident Living on Cash Reserve
Provident living is building some cash reserve for your emergency needs. If you do not feel you can do so, discipline yourself to save even a little bit at a time. Start with even the coins you receive as change from the stores when you purchase items. Whether you save or not, the time will pass, so why not save your coins and be prepared? Do this unfailingly, and you will reach a point when you have become accustomed to saving some money whenever you can. Provident living means you use your cash reserve for emergencies only.

Financial Strategy for Provident Living

    • Spend less than your earnings.
    • Before getting into debt, ask yourself if want you are getting into is a need or a want
    • If you are in debt, pay it off as quickly as possible
    • Determine what your non-essential expenditures are, and plan on how to reduce them
    • Make a family budget of planned and actual expenses. Make changes accordingly and adhere to the budget.
Educate Your Children on Provident Living
Be careful about how you educate your children on preparing for emergencies and natural disasters. You want them to have a positive experience. We recommend that you check out www.fema.gov/kids and acquire some materials that you believe may assist you in preparing your children. You can also go to http://www.providentliving.org, a website that wholly endorses and educates people on self-reliance and welfare resources.
