All of Us Should Learn How! Provident living is an approach, a cultivation of a standard of living that can assist us in managing the temporal and spiritual eventualities in our lives. For the purposes of this website, we will address only the temporal side of preparedness. None of us know what disasters we may face that would make money fail, or make it difficult for us to buy water and food and other emergency supplies. Provident living can help us prepare for these eventualities.
Grow Your Own Garden Anyone with the desire to learn provident living can do so. You can start with growing your own garden. Find out what herbs, vegetables, and flowers are suitable for your climate. If you have limited spaces, you can grow them indoors in pots and planters. Do companion planting for better growth and color. Make them as pleasing to your eyes as possible, and you can have table food and a special corner of beauty. If you are planting indoors, you may need grow lights for some of them especially if you live in a basement apartment. We invite you to study the gardening pages in this website. Involve your family members in the project, and enjoy the bonding that results from your efforts at provident living. Storing Potable Water To prepare for the eventuality of disrupted or polluted water supply, provident living suggests that you start building a supply of potable water. The best and safest way to store drinking water is to buy the commercially bottled water. You can also purchase purified water in pouches. They are easy to carry. Buy a few every time you go to the store. Over time, you will develop peace of mind about how much you have accumulated for your loved ones and yourself. If you do not care to purchase commercially bottled water, save your juice glass bottles and their lids. You can also buy your soda pops in the 2-liter soft plastic bottles and save the containers and the lids. Wash the bottles and lids with hot soapy water. To disinfect, put a teaspoon of household bleach for every quart of soapy water and swish in the bottles for several seconds. Rinse very well in clean water and let dry. Wash your hands thoroughly prior to filling the bottles, and do not touch the inside of the lids. If you are using pre-treated municipal water, you do not need to pre-treat again. Store the water away from light and heat. You should also check that your containers could handle freezing temperatures. What to Avoid When Storing Water Avoid those plastic jugs of drinking water or milk that you buy at grocery stores, as they turn brittle after a short while. They also do not seal well. Avoid juice or milk cartons. You cannot wash them sufficiently well, neither can you close them properly. Avoid household bleach that has additives like dye, perfume, etc. Do not add that type of bleach to your rinse water when you prepare your containers for storing water. Do Not Forget the Label! Another idea for provident living is to remember the all-important labels: write the date of storage so that you can properly rotate your water. You should replace your water storage every six months, unless you stored unopened commercially bottled water or water pouches in their original containers. More Provident Living!
